June is nearly here.
The curtains stay open longer than usual. The windows draw in the outside air. Shoes are left near the door, and the light stretches across the floor well past dinner. No one seems eager to rush the day along.
Summer often begins this way, not all at once, but through small changes we slowly begin to live inside.
The first fruits appear, and meals move outdoors. Grass is carried in on bare feet. The sound of children outdoors lingers past supper while the sky softens toward dusk.
Early summer evenings have their own rhythm. Conversations continue on a little longer, and the last bit of daylight hangs on. The air drifting through the house carries the feeling that the day is not quite ready to end.
Some of the most memorable moments arrive without planning: a breeze through the kitchen window. The golden light that settles across the table before nightfall.
None of it grand, and yet these are often the things that stay with us.
June opens the door to them again.
